Accessible homes replace former NHS clinic

Today we hand over the keys to 25 new homes on Denmark Road, Gloucester. We have transformed the former NHS mental health clinic into 25 new apartments for social rent. The original Victorian red-brick building has been converted into nine flats while alongside it, a sympathetically-designed new block of 16 flats has been built.

The spacious one- and two-bedroom apartments in the new block are all fully accessible for wheelchair users. Other design features across some of the apartments include wet rooms supplied with grab rails, widened doorways and corridors, electric sockets situated at a comfortable height for a wheelchair user and even one kitchen with an adjustable height work surface. The scheme also benefits from electric vehicle charging points, and lockable bike, buggy and electric scooter stores to ensure that communal areas can be kept clean and clear.

"Fully wheelchair accessible homes are in great demand nationally, with a very long waiting list of people who need them. These new flats will give our new customers the ability to live safety and independently in their new home."

Angela Conder, Gloucester city councillor for Kingsholm and Wooton said: “I have been watching this development grow for the last four or five years and I’m really pleased to see it come to the finishing point. We are very proud of our street trees and open spaces in this lovely part of Kingsholm, and we have a volunteer gardening group where newcomers are very welcome to join. I hope to meet all the residents as they move in and that they will be very happy here.”

All GCH homes are let via Gloucestershire’s Homeseeker Plus scheme which is managed by the local authority. Applicants are given a banding based on their housing needs. If you are interested in becoming a GCH tenant, you can apply online to create a Homeseeker Plus account.
